Agenda for the POC Conference Call, Weds Mar 3rd, 11am PST

Agenda: We will continue with the discussions of the changes made at the Ithaca meeting Dec '09. These items have been posted on SourceForge for people to comment on.

1. in vitro cultured cell, tissue and organ was moved out of the Plant Structure class and made a separate namespace.

def: "Isolated and grown plant protoplast, cell, tissue and organ, involving, as a common factor, growth of microbe-free plant material in sterile environment, such as sterilized nutrient medium in a test tube or petri dish."

We discussed the pros and cons of whether or not the parent term "in vitro cultured cell, tissue and organ" could be eliminated or made a separate namespace, as was proposed in Ithaca. It was decided to create two new parent terms directly under plant structure: in vitrocultured plant structure and "In vivo plant structure". All the terms currently under "plant structure" will go under the new "In vivo plant structure" parent.

2. plant structure -since this is the top level term in the Ontology, we should look at it and resolve the def'n before moving on.

def: "An anatomical structure that is or was part of a plant" [Poc:curators] comment: for anatomical structure: see CARO- part includes both proper parts and improper parts

3.Term request from TAIR for "gamete"- proposed (RW): add gamete to the ontology (is_a parent, plant cell), with sperm cell and egg cell as siblings under a common parent 'gamete'.

4.New parent terms proposed by Ramona:

A. *cardinal organ part

Note: Cardinal organ part was in SF originally as "organ segment or organ part."

def: A plant structure that is a direct or immediate part of an organ that is often maximal(?) but is smaller than the organ itself. Examples include lobe, operculum, neck, petiole?, leaflet.

B. * collective plant structure def: A plant structure that is composed of multiple organs but is not an organ. (Maybe something about a bona fide boundary, some way to distinguish it from whole plant). Examples: flower, perianth, inflorescence. collective structure or compound organ?
